I have always had an interest in mindfulness, having a friend who is a practitioner and mental health nurse and having seen how it supported her patients. I went on the course to use the technique for my foster son to help with his anxiety. I never really considered myself as a person who suffered in stressful situation until I began the course at work. Taking that time away and just concentrating on myself gave me the opportunity to really bring those feelings to the surface. The pressure of work and then going home to support a child who had suffered trauma had taken its toll and I was becoming more isolated. After the first session I was able to re-focus on what was important. I realised that if I wasn’t at my best emotionally then I would not be able to fully commit to my job both in and out of work. I did practice the meditation before going to bed and found that I was sleeping much better and not getting up at three in the morning worrying about the day ahead. Our AJ Bicât Facilitator advised me to do the practice in the mornings to get in the right space for the day. Although I felt this would be a challenge I realised that I was creating my own barriers. I found through morning practice I was able to make time for me and get a fresh look each day.

AJ Bicât worked with DWP to develop Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence capability through the MEQ® Leadership and Productivity Programmes. This work started with the HR Executive Team where levels of experience and understanding varied considerably across the group. The learning itself was flexible enough to adapt to this range of experience material and techniques were accessible and easy to engage with and use. On a personal level AJ's’ enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for his work came across and he adapted to meet the complex needs of the group particularly around logistics and timing of events.
